About the walk

Join the Merrow Tree Wardens and St Martha’s retiring Tree Warden for a fascinating afternoon exploring Chilworth’s remarkable natural and cultural heritage. This guided walk will take us past towering trees, historic sites, and beautiful countryside. Along the way, our knowledgeable wardens will share insights into notable trees such as majestic redwoods, venerable oaks, and precious alders that thrive in this corner of the Surrey Hills.

We’ll also explore the village’s compelling 300-year history of gunpowder production along the Tillingbourne, with a visit to the remains of the old Gunpowder Mills. Hear stories about the wooden rail line that served them and the accidents that inevitably occurred.

Route options

  • Shorter route: approximately 1 hour — returning to Halfpenny Close after visiting the Manor area.
  • Longer route: approximately 2 hours — continue via the vineyard and Gunpowder Mills, ending with refreshments at the Percy Arms before returning to the start by road or woodland path.

Notes

Come rain or shine, the walk will proceed — except in dangerous storm conditions.

Book early to avoid disappointment. Numbers are limited.
