Update: North Downs Line Signalling Upgrade
I am writing to update you on our ongoing work to upgrade signalling and level crossings on the North Downs Line between Shalford and Gomshall stations.
As you will know, our teams will be upgrading 4 level crossings on the North Down Line, which includes Chilworth, Tangley, Brook and Burrows Lane level crossing. All four level crossings will have new signalling installed which will be controlled by the Guildford Area Signalling Centre.
Please find below the upcoming planned level crossing closure dates up till April, the exact dates will be confirmed closer to the time. Our project team will be writing to residents in advance of the dates with information about the associated road closures.
These closures are part of the preparatory work before the next phase of the upgrade takes place from Saturday 1 to Sunday 16 February 2025. The line from Guildford to Gatwick will be shut with a replacement bus running throughout, as engineers continue the resignalling works. Over Christmas, a crane will be installing a Relocatable Equipment Building (REB) at Burrows level crossing. This REB which will house the electrical equipment that will control and monitor the upgraded level crossing.
When complete, teams will have upgraded 16 signals (which act as the traffic lights of the railway) along the line, as well as installing new, state-of-the art level crossing technology to make them safer for both train and road users.
